Department of Justice Occupation Preparatory Bursary

Background

The aim of the Department of Justice in conjunction with the Victoria Police is to encourage students from a diversity of cultures to undertake the preparatory course with the intention of ultimate employment as police officers, sheriffs and corrections officers.


Bursary Funding

The Department has committed to donate $4,000 to the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation to fund the bursaries. The bursaries will be available to students from a disadvantaged background who without financial assistance, may be required to abandon further studies.  Ideally, the students will be seeking to undertake the Victorian Police Education Entrance Exam on completion of the preparatory program.

Funding is intended to cover course fees of $240 for eight (8) students in 2012 and eight (8) students in 2013 or equivalent numbers each year as required.


Eligibility

This bursary will be available to students studying the Occupational Preparatory Program of ten (10) weeks duration at Chisholm Institute.

Applications made on the Department of Justice Occupational Preparatory Bursary Application Form, available via email from the Executive Officer of the Foundation at ccef@chisholm.edu.au or on the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation website at www.CarolineChisholm.org.au, will be accepted from existing or prospective students who meet the following requirements:

Mandatory

 Aged 18 with VCE or mature age over 21, with work experience
 Holding a current Driver’s Licence
 Sound personal qualities such as academic motivation, interpersonal skills, determination and community spirit

and may be experiencing or have experienced one or more of the following –

 Economic barriers to further study
 Individual or family adversity
 Excessive relocation or changes of school
 Dislocation as a refugee

Applicants must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, hold a permanent humanitarian visa, or with the exception of degrees, be eligible for a Government subsidised place

Holders of a Low Income Card are encouraged to apply

NOTE: It is strongly advised that applicants indicate clearly on the Application Form any disadvantages to further study, which may include current or lifetime experiences.
